BANANA SLUG STRING BAND JOINS FRIENDS OF KERN
IN SUPPORTING KERN THROUGH SPECIAL PROJECTS

The Banana Slug String Band (BSSB), featuring Kern's own Doug Greenfield (summer staffer mid and late 1970's) is working with Friends of Kern, Inc. to provide special fundraising opportunities to help support YMCA Camp Kern.

In 2004, the BSSB helped raise money to send kids to camp by allowing FOK to purchase BSSB CDs at a discount price of $10 each and resell them for $15 each, with the entire $5 difference being sent to YMCA Camp Kern for camperships, as FOK absorbed all shipping costs. Thanks to all of the donors who participated.

This year (2005), the BSSB helps pay tribute to former Kern Director Kent Barnheiser by allowing FOK to again take advantage of the special resell offer and use the $5 difference to help fulfill a $10,000 pledge that FOK has made to YMCA Camp Kern for the Kent Barnheiser Lobby naming opportunity at camp's new Harry Schiewetz Assembly Hall. BSSB CD purchasers will be added to the Kent Barnheiser Lobby donor list unless otherwise specified.

The Banana Slug String Band received the 1996 Howard Bell Award for Outstanding Contributions in Outdoor Education, and several of their CDs have won individual awards, including the 2000 AFIM Indie Award, Children's Album of the Year for "Goin' Wild". The Band was the keynote speaker at the 2003 ACA Ohio Camping Conference, the keynote speaker at the 2003 Environmental Education Association of Indiana Annual Conference, and this year was featured at the national American Camp Association conference. In the August, 2004 monthly newsletter to YMCA camp professionals from the YMCA of the USA, the BSSB web site was listed as one of 4 Outdoor Environmental Education "Resources on the Web".

"Dreams take on a new twist for kids ushered off to sleep by Wings of Slumber. A stellar cast of guest Slugs including Grammy Award winners George Winston, Laurie Lewis and others exuberantly shine through each lullaby, luring listeners of all ages to join in on the musical journey marked with messages of environmental stewardship and wonder."
